5 Things Every Person Should Do To Prepare For Visiting Africa
Monday, January 3rd, 2011The idealistic image of Africa that is portrayed in movies is all that most people know before they make an actual visit to Africa. The reality of Africa is not the same and there are many steps you must take to prepare for any trip to Africa. Here are 5 things everyone should do to prepare for such a trip.
Shots
If you know anything at all about visiting Africa then you know that you will be needing a number of shots. The shots that you need will be dependent upon the areas in Africa that you plan to visit so you will need to get them from someone knowledgeable in what shots will be needed for your visit or you will need to find someone else with adequate knowledge to give you direction. And don’t put these shots off until the last second. Some of them require a series of shots so you may need to start months before your actual trip.
Anti-Malaria Drugs
You may or may not need to be prepared to avoid malaria during your visit to Africa but most countries still have malaria as a definite risk for travelers. Ideally, you will want to check with your health professional or travel clinic a minimum of 6 weeks before your trip to get anti-malaria drugs. You may receive drugs both to prevent malaria and to treat it.
Modest Clothing For The Season
To prepare for visiting Africa you want to equip yourself with the right clothing. The clothing that you wear will depend on the season and the conditions in the areas that you will be visiting. You want to bring modest clothing. Boots or shoes that are comfortable are an excellent choice as is clothing that will reflect some of the sunlight. Bring a hat for sun protection too.
Passports And Visas
Of course you will need a valid passport when you are travelling and you may need a visa as well to enter the countries that you plan to visit during your trip. Whether or not you need a visa will depend on what part of Africa you are visiting and how long you plan to spend there. You will need blank pages in your passport. At least two blank pages are usually advised for any trip to Africa.
Learn About The Area You Will Visit
Again, the Africa that you will experience will not be the Africa that you have seen in the movies. You will want to learn as much as possible about the areas of Africa that you will be visiting before you go. The internet is an excellent source of information as it often provides information that is more up to date than the information you will find in many books.
These are 5 things every person should do to prepare for visiting Africa. Africa is a wonderful country and the experience of a lifetime. Just plan to make your trip as fun and safe as possible long before you set foot on the soil.
